Style Me Redundant

Back when I first started wedding planning, I didn't really look at any blogs.  Martha Stewart Weddings was my main wedding porn, and I hadn't found the other goodies the interwebz had to offer.  Now, of course, there is a plethora of wedding inspiration on my blogreel, but about 7 months ago it was a much simpler time.  It was just me and Martha, Martha and me.

That is, until I saw a friend at a wedding this past May.  She was getting married in August, and nonchalantly told me to check out a certain site if I ever wanted to procrastinate for hours.  She knows me too well.  I feel like I could star in a movie called The Procrastinator.  Envision Arnold Schwarzennager's body with my face, and instead of saving the world, I'd just be putting things off.
She was supposed to be studying...
So where was I?  Oh yeah, the procrastinating website.  It's name was Style Me Pretty.  As soon as she uttered those three words my wedding planning life was forever changed.  When I first typed that url into my MacBook's browser, I saw the most beautiful things I had ever seen.  Homemade canned jam favors!  Menus written on chalk boards!  Artistically framed photographs of hanging Monique Lhullier dresses!  All the weddings are in beautiful fields and it never rains.  It NEVER rains!

Of course, my wedding goggles immediately went on.  I had to have my wedding featured on this blog.

Reality soon set in.  I realized that my wedding would never be featured on this blog, or really any blog of that sort.  Why?  Well, I'm having it in a hotel ballroom for one.  Not some lavish ballroom, a generic hotel ballroom.  You can't fit 300+ people in a field in the middle of July in West Virginia.  Someone would fall over from heat stroke.  I promise you.  I'm going to do the best that I can with my room, but I can't change the fact that it is inside and not exactly an opulent venue.  There are many other reasons why I don't fit the Style Me Pretty mold, but I feel like you'd realize that by looking at their blog for 15 minutes or less.

So, once I let that dream go, you would think I'd stop looking at that blog, right?  Hahaha, no that would make too much sense.  I still would look at that blog and feel inferior for not having a wedding that could like that.  I would also berate myself out loud, screaming things like, "Why can't I incorporate engraved tree stumps in MY wedding.  WHY?!"

Last week, I was catching up on my blog reads and I realized I hadn't read Style Me Pretty in awhile, and I had to ask myself how that could be.  After a bit of musing, I realized that I was bored of that blog.  One can only see so many country chic weddings before their eyes explode.

I came to the conclusion that though all of the weddings featured on that site are beautiful, many of them are very, very similar.  I feel like anyone, given the budget and crafting skills could look at that blog and execute a beautiful wedding from their ideas.  However, I want my wedding to be my own entirely.  Sure, I'm taking some ideas from SMP, but I'm also incorporating many ideas exclusive to me.  I don't want to offend anyone featured on that blog, I just feel like at this point, very few wedding details on SMP make me go "oooohhhh" and "aaahhhh."  Those engraved tree stumps?  I've seen about 10 this month alone.  I realize that SMP's editor chooses weddings based on her own taste, but I feel like that taste has become a bit redundant.  I'm even sick of those darned jam jars, which is good, because if I tried canning, I would probably give half of my guests botulism.

Has anyone else had Style Me Pretty burnout?  Also, have you noticed that many of the weddings look similar, or am I just nitpicking?

  1. Yup, I totally understand what you mean. There is amazing inspiration on there, but after awhile it all starts to look the same. And we aren't having our wedding in a field either. Oh well!

  2. I totally know what you mean... my complaint is really that I feel like since Green Wedding Shoes, Ruffled, and Grey Likes Wedding changed their sites they look even MORE similar. However I hate that Once Wed always has these elaborate three part posts... I have about 10 blogs on my circuit and I have to admit... they are all starting to run together.
